Exceptional people usually don’t chose politics for a career. Problem is exceptional is exactly what we need. It is rare. It is special. As politicians are the people who decide our future, should we demand nothing less?
Politics is a vocation of service to the people. All the people. Not your special group. Not your contributors. You are elected to defend the Constitution and to represent the people of your community.
If we cannot expect that of them, and we can’t, then we must tie them to the Constitution that the damage they cause be limited.
I see tremendous wisdom in the Founding Fathers limiting government and providing checks and balances.
In 2008, we faced tremendous challenges as a nation. We were in a severe economic crisis, and at war in two different countries. Our rights and liberties threatened, we were sinking under mounting debt. Our nation was increasingly polarized, and the need for true leadership was desperate.
The major parties offered us two junior senators with very limited experience,and an angry loose cannon who was at war with his own party’s base. Obama‘s victory spoke more to McCain’s repulsiveness than to Obama’s mandate, but that aside, this was the best our nation could produce in a time of dire need?
Four years later, and the economy is far worst. Our rights and liberties continue to be attacked. We are winding down two wars, but gearing up for another major invasion. Our debt is beyond comprehension and assures a huge handicap on this nation as we strive to move forward. We are so polarized that we can no longer hear each other even when we agree.
Where is the leadership? Where is the exceptionalism that we need to move us forward? As our leadership insists on taking greater and greater control over our lives, where is the true leadership to offset the rightful lack of confidence that the people feel?
We don’t need empty words. We need character. We need strength. We need people who know what they are doing and aren’t sitting around playing politics while the crisis grows and liberty fades.
We the people need to take back what is ours. We need to demand excellence in our leaders, and not settle. We need to limit, and not expand, the heavy hand of government, for the politicians interests do not reflect our interests. We need to be aware and be involved. We need to set aside the cartoon characters that both the left and right have sold and meet each other as fellow Americans with a deep stake in the future of our nation.
As our politicians lack leadership and conviction let that leadership come from the people that we may chart ourselves clear of this disaster.
Do we really expect those who created the storm to set us free from it?
The answer is us.
